Cultivating "close attention"

How to practice close placement and the progressive stages of shamatha

Hi friends,

We did it! We officially made our way through Module 1 of Introduction to Buddhist Meditation Practice and are now diving into the first type of Buddhist meditation practice: shamatha or peaceful abiding. Over the next two months, we’ll learn an adapted version of the nine progressive stages of shamatha practice as taught within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Unless you’ve explicitly practiced within a Tibetan Buddhist sangha before, you likely haven’t been taught meditation this way, and wee oh weee friends am I excited to share this with you! Why? Because I think this approach reveals layers upon layers of insight through integration.

In this week’s video, I give an overview of the next month’s content along with instructions on the technique of “close attention.”

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • What is shamatha meditation

  • The four stages of shamatha practice and how they differ

  • How to practice “close attention” and why this technique comes first

  • How insight is a natural byproduct of shamatha both on and off the cushion
